SUMMARY:Land Use Booth at the Oregon State Fair
DESCRIPTION:Thrive is working with land use coalition partners on a booth at the Oregon State Fair to promote Oregon’s land use system and direct attention to the reasons why Oregon is such a great state to live\, work\, farm\, and play in. SUMMARY:November 2022 Election Candidate Forum
DESCRIPTION:Thrive Hood River and the Historic Hood River Hotel are pleased to host a November Election Candidate Forum on Wednesday the 26th\, at 6 pm. Recent polls compiled by the Oregonian and national media outlets suggest this election will be one of the most competitive statewide and local races in decades. For this reason\, we want to give voters the opportunity to shake hands\, have a beer\, and do some politickin’ with the candidates running from state senate to city council. \n\n\n\nCandidates for State Senator\, State Representative\, and the Hood River City Council will attend to present their views on governance and the path forward. Questions will be gathered from the audience in writing.  \n\n\n\nThe forum will be held at the Historic Hood River Hotel’s Emerald Room on Wednesday the 26th at 6 pm. There will be seating and a bar\, courtesy of the hotel\, so don’t be shy and come see your neighbors and the candidates for a good feast of democracy. \n\n\n\nA video recording will be available shortly after the forum for those who can’t make it in person. \n\n\n\nTo submit a question\, email Nico Salter at nico@thrivehoodriver.org

SUMMARY:Tilly Jane Ski Trail #643 Hike
DESCRIPTION:Join us and Friends of Mount Hood for a naturalist guided hike up the Tilly Jane Ski Trail #643 to the Tilly Jane A Frame. This intermediate/difficult trail was first cut in 1938 by members of the Crag Rats and climbs 1900 vertical feet and totals 5.4 miles. The beautiful up and back hike passes through the forest that would be heavily impacted by any potential destination resort development\, the regrowth from the Gnarl Ridge fire\, and into the Tilly Jane Historic District. This is a chance to learn about our ongoing work with the Cooper Spur Wild and Free Coalition to protect this area from destination resort development. \n\n\n\nClick here to RSVP and get full details. Feel free to reach out to Jackie at jackie@thrivehoodriver.org with any questions.

SUMMARY:Sense of Place: Rajneeshees in Oregon - Cancelled Due to Covid-19
DESCRIPTION:Unfortunately\, this event has been cancelled due to Covid-19.\n\nThrive Hood River is honored to sponsor this lecture about an extraordinary time in Oregon history when a religious sect from India set up an experiment on a ranch outside Madras. In the 1980s\, the Indian guru Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh presided over a sect that professed self-sufficiency and love that morphed into a tightly-controlled cult that engaged in assassination attempts and plots\, orchestrated the largest illegal wiretapping operation in U.S. history\, and poisoned hundreds of innocent diners as a way to suppress voter turnout. Why did they come to Oregon and how did they descend into criminal conduct? Local\, state and federal officials all were put under enormous pressure to confront the group\, and they responded with varying measures of success. What are the lessons even today from those long-ago events?\n\nPresenter Les Zaitz is an Oregon native. He started his professional journalism career right out of high school\, hired in 1973 as a general assignment reporter for the Salem Statesman Journal. He continued writing as a staff reporter and correspondent while attending the University of Oregon\, working for the Springfield News\, the Oregon Journal\, UPI\, and the New York Times. From 1976-1987\, he was a reporter for The Oregonian\, handling various beats before taking an assignment in 1982 to the investigative team where he co-wrote a 20-part series about the Rajneeshees that was published in the Oregonian. More recently\, he was included in the Netflix series Wild Wild Country\, which looks at some of the history behind Rajneeshpuram in Oregon.\n\nLes is the editor and publisher of the weekly Malheur Enterprise newspaper\, an award-winning newspaper based in Vale\, Oregon. In 2018\, he and a partner founded the Salem Reporter\, a digital news service based in Oregon’s capital. He is the CEO and editor. Soon after its launch\, Salem Reporter formed a collaboration with two other Oregon news organizations to create the Oregon Capital Bureau\, focusing on state government reports. Les leads the team of three reporters as its editor.\n\nSense of Place is an annual lecture series  produced by Gorge Owned and Mt. Adams Institute that seeks to foster a deeper understanding of and connection to our landscape and one another.\n\n$10 Suggested Donation.\n\nThese popular conversations have been selling out\, advance tickets are available via Eventbrite.

SUMMARY:Schemes\, Dreams and Teams: a Century-Long Saga to Protect the Columbia Gorge with Kevin Gorman
DESCRIPTION:Thrive is honored to sponsor this Sense of Place lecture on a landscape that is near and dear to our hearts. Over a century ago\, new roadways into the Columbia Gorge led to audacious schemes to “improve the scenic holdings of the Columbia Gorge” by building the world’s tallest elevator at Mist Falls and polo grounds atop Devil’s Rest. Development proposals like these and others eventually led to the creation of the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area. \nHowever\, the visionaries of the National Scenic Area couldn’t have foreseen the population increases of the Portland area\, the explosive growth of outdoor recreation\, let alone climate change and wildfire threats. Join Friends of the Columbia Gorge Executive Director Kevin Gorman for a dive into history\, conflict and how technology might help all of us keep the Columbia Gorge wild and beautiful for generations to come. \nSense of Place is an annual lecture series produced by our friends at Gorge Owned (GO!) that seeks to foster a deeper understanding of and connection to our landscape and to one another. \n$10 Suggested Donation.
